NIC’s Parvez Abbasi
Mr Parvez Abbasi wears a number of hats, each more impressive than the next. He is the man who set up the telecom infrastructure in Pakistan with Instaone and later with Mobilink. He is also the man behind MobileZone, a homegrown unicorn. We sat down to talk to NIC’s Parvez Abbasi – project director – below is a video excerpt from our session, for the full podcast, you can listen to it using the player at the top of this post, or subscribe to it for free on iTunes.
You would be excused to presume that these accolades alone would be enough to rest on. However, not one to shy away from giving back, Mr. Abbasi now serves as the Project Director of National Incubation Center (NIC). NIC helps guide and incubate startups giving them every opportunity to succeed. There have been efforts before that shared the same aims. These were Plan 9, i2i and similar other smaller pockets, but nothing this large scale has occurred before. It efficacy can be gauged by the fact that NICs are opening up all over the country housing some very promising startups.
Our agenda was to get a full picture of what the startup atmosphere is like these days as well as a complete picture of where we are headed. We also discussed how the telecom sector is doing and where he sees the industry going and how much of a future he sees in there.
For those readers who do not know about the NIC, it is a project of Ignite (formerly ICT R&D) in collaboration with Jazz xlr8. The NIC is a platform to anyone with a viable business idea.
